Gains:
- Can separate critical part from ordinary part
- Can determine stock level according to lead time
- Plans stock strategy in export projects
Stockpiling each item binds capital; not stocking any stops production. The correct approach is to classify the part by two criteria: failure outcome and lead time.
Classification
Critical part: when it breaks down, the plant stops and its supply takes a long time. Example: specially sized roller bearing, main drive motor, plansifter suspension element.
Important part: when it breaks down, capacity drops but production does not stop; The supply is medium term.
Ordinary part: quickly available from local market; There is no need to stock up.
In export projects
In a facility abroad, the supply time increases to weeks, including customs. That's why the first set of critical parts is included in the commissioning package; "Why these are necessary" is clearly explained to the customer.
Prepare the spare parts list for the facility. The overall list creates either overstock or understock; Neither of them pleases the customer.
